PRACTICAL ADVICE FROM MBR

How Do I Know How Much My Vehicle Is Worth?

Understand used and scrap vehicle values, what affects an offer and which details help the team assess your vehicle.

Your vehicle’s value depends first on what someone can do with it: use it again, repair it for resale, or recover parts and materials from it. Age and mileage matter for a used vehicle, but condition, history and demand also affect the offer. For a scrap vehicle, weight, materials, completeness and the practical collection arrangements become more relevant.

The most useful figure is a current offer based on accurate details about your own vehicle. An advertised price, an online estimate and a confirmed purchase offer are different things.

Start with the right type of value

A usable vehicle has a market as transport. A repairable vehicle may have value to a buyer willing to take on the work. A vehicle at the end of its useful life is assessed for an appropriate recycling route. These can produce very different figures for what appears to be the same make and model.

An MOT failure or non-running engine does not automatically answer the question. The nature of the fault and the rest of the vehicle matter. Our sell or scrap guide helps you decide which conversation to start.

What affects the value of a used vehicle?

Consider the whole vehicle, rather than concentrating on its age or the number on the dashboard. The main details to provide are:

  • Make, model and specification: the engine, gearbox, trim and equipment help identify comparable vehicles.
  • Age and mileage: these provide context for use and wear, alongside maintenance and condition.
  • Mechanical and cosmetic condition: known faults, warning lights, damage and interior wear can affect the work a buyer expects.
  • Service history and MOT: records help explain maintenance, repairs and outstanding issues.
  • History and modifications: disclose known accident history, changes from standard specification and any uncertainty about mileage.

For example, two cars of the same age may need very different amounts of preparation. One could have documented recent maintenance; the other might need diagnosis and several repairs. A registration number alone will not show all of those differences.

Use online estimates as a starting point

Valuation tools can help establish a reference, but check their assumptions. Some estimates assume a vehicle is in good condition and do not account for every fault or modification. Autotrader’s explanation of its private-advert valuations is one example of why reading the conditions matters.

If comparing adverts, match the model, engine, gearbox, age and approximate mileage. Then look closely at condition and history. An asking price is not proof that a sale happened at that price. A dealer’s advertised retail price also covers a different transaction from buying your vehicle directly.

Demand changes over time. A figure saved from months ago may be useful background, but it is not a current offer.

How is scrap vehicle value different?

For scrap, recoverable material and parts are central to the assessment. Weight is relevant, but it is not enough to multiply a vehicle’s published weight by a headline metal price: a complete vehicle contains several materials, and treatment and transport are part of the process.

Demand for scrap metal and reusable parts can change. Vehicle completeness matters too, so tell the buyer if major components are missing. Industry scrap car price tracking illustrates why broad market averages cannot tell you the exact value of your individual vehicle.

Provide the collection postcode and explain whether the vehicle rolls, steers and can be reached by a recovery vehicle. Do not assume removing parts will increase your total return; discuss the vehicle as it stands before changing anything.

Should you spend money before getting an offer?

Get an assessment before committing to repairs purely to improve a selling price. Compare the likely repair cost with the difference between an offer in its current condition and the possible value afterwards. Include time and uncertainty in that decision, particularly if the diagnosis is incomplete.

A clean vehicle and organised records make its condition easier to assess. They do not guarantee a higher price. Describe any recent work accurately and provide invoices where available.

Ask what the quote includes

Before agreeing, check whether the figure depends on an inspection, whether collection is included and whether disclosed faults have been taken into account. Ask how long the offer is valid. Quote expiry varies, so confirm it with the buyer instead of assuming an old amount still applies.

For MBR to consider a usable or repairable car, send its details through Sell My Car. The team reviews the enquiry and contacts you; it is not an instant sale valuation. For a vehicle ready for recycling, start a scrap quote with your registration and collection postcode.
